"Best locksmith" claims: how to judge a locksmith honestly

Nearly every locksmith ad calls itself the top choice. Slogans can't be checked. These things can.

Check the license

California requires locksmith companies to be licensed by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS), and employees carry a registration card. You can look up a license on the BSIS website. When the technician arrives, ask to see the card.

Ask how pricing works

A trustworthy service tells you the service call fee, explains how labor is figured, and confirms the price on site before starting. Be wary of a suspiciously low phone quote that balloons once the work begins.

Know who does the work

Many locksmith ads are run by referral services that pass jobs to independent contractors. That's legal and common, but you deserve to know it. Milpitas Locksmiths says so plainly in its terms.

Get it in writing

Ask for an invoice listing the business name, license number, work done, parts used and warranty. Then keep it somewhere you'll find it.

Distrust promises nobody can keep

Nobody can promise an exact arrival time on a busy Saturday night. A realistic estimate tells you more about a company than any slogan ever will.
